The Art and Sport of Business Coaching....and Does The Media Work?

THE NOWHERE OFFICES GOES COACHING

“Coaching clears up a lot of the behaviours around problematic management - in a way, coaching hoovers up the stuff that we're wanting to get out of the workplace.”

Delighted to share this latest episode taking a deep dive into the world of coaching with Tiffany Gaskell of Performance Coaching who took in very good grace my slightly ‘pushback’ questions from the get-go about whether coaching works (it does).

Most people think of coaching as a mainly 1:1 activity (like therapy) but in fact we learned that it’s more than this. Hearing the programme one distinguished coach I know, Rachel Ward (who I’ve also worked with) confirmed that it makes sense to share out the benefits of coaching with your manager or boss, as well as benefitting personally.

DOES THE MEDIA WORK?

Image result for when was the prince andrew BBC interview

Five years ago this week *that* interview took place which was the biggest scoop of the century for the BBC and the woman who secured it - who worked her contacts and led the negotiations which resulted in such an epic interview is Sam McAlister, the former Newsnight booker who lifted the lid on the inner workings of the media. Her bestselling book went on to become the award-winning Netflix film Scoop!

I’m delighted that Sam McAlister will join me on Tuesday 26th November in London at an exclusive Workathon event hosted by The Londoner hotel for a recording of The Nowhere Office podcast to talk about how the media works, and she will be joined by Matthew d’Ancona, who combines writing books with Michael Caine with co-hosting his own successful podcast, and being Editor-at-Large for The New European, and Ravi Mattu, the former FT journalist who is now Managing Editor of DealBook at the New York Times - an example of how the media newsletter is becoming big news.

They will discuss the ways in which the media works has changed beyond recognition in 5 years: The BBC itself; social media; podcasts versus prime time; and micro and niche newsletters and new media kids on the block.

All of which affects work and how we understand work - and do it (joining BlueSky.Social may have shredded the last of my concentration but my gosh it’s fun and a lot less toxic than X).

We have 6 free places to give to readers of this Substack if you would like to come: it starts at 6.00pm for ticketed guests. Email assist@workathon.io by 6.00pm tonight.
